Mayor (then Candidate) Pete is now Secretary Pete!

Pete Buttigieg is now U.S. Secretary of Transportation making him the first openly LGBTQ person to ever serve in the country’s cabinet. This is a historic day and a fitting accolade to the next career chapter in the journey of an out and proud public servant. Pete Buttigieg is the new trail blazer for LGBTQ politicians that has taken the mantle of Harvey Milk and honors his legacy in way that Harvey would be proud of.

WASHINGTON – Pete Buttigieg was confirmed as Transportation Secretary Tuesday as the first openly gay Cabinet secretary to be confirmed by the Senate.

Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and a Democratic presidential candidate, received overwhelming bipartisan support with a 86-13 vote.

Following the vote, Buttigieg said he was “honored and humbled by today’s vote in the Senate—and ready to get to work.”

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., the incoming Democratic chair of the panel overseeing Buttigieg’s confirmation, praised him Tuesday as a “young, energetic mayor” who could “help us usher in a new era of transportation.”

RBG lies in state becoming the first woman to ever do so

If you are like me you are probably still reeling from the news one week ago today that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had passed away. Despite her dying wish that she be replaced by the next administration it looks as though Senate Republicans will rush to fill the seat with an anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-ACA conservative. RBG lies in state today in the nation’s capitol, and while it warms my heart because it’s well deserved, I almost fainted when I learned she is FIRST woman in our history to ever do so. Yes, you heard me right, RBG is the FIRST woman ever to be honored in such a way.

I was shocked when I heard this, and thought for moment I had misheard, or someone in the news was mistaken. How telling is that? How sad is that? What a patriarchal and nauseating reality. I’ll even do you one better: Last year, congressional giant Elijah Cummings was the first African American to lie in state. John Lewis was only the second African American when he passed a couple months ago. How sad for us as a country. How ungrateful. What a travesty of social justice.

Get woke America. We are not the bastion of freedom and equality we think we are. We have a lot of work to do. 🙁
