The Central Valley is a funny place. It’s one of the most fertile places for growing plants, but it naturally lacks the water to do so. Obviously the majority of water for crops comes from pumping it from the ground. But this has a cost: Land subsidence, or put simply, the land sinks. And it really does sink, a lot. Some areas can sink down as much as 1 foot a year.
